In voting this week, College freshman Michael Flicker defeated College freshman Lisa Marshall to become the class of 2000's president for next year. Wharton sophomore Clive Correia and College sophomore Sarah Gleit will vie for class of 1999 president in a run-off tomorrow. College sophomores Lucia Zapatero and Robin Grossman will also compete in tomorrow's run-off for junior class vice president. Flicker, who begins his second term as president of the class of 2000, said he has many plans, including a semiformal in the fall, based on last year's success. College freshman Jeff Lynn defeated College freshman Alexander Hack to become sophomore class vice president. Other new sophomore class board members -- who ran uncontested -- include College freshman David Cho as vice president for corporate sponsorship, College freshman Ben Schein as treasurer and Nursing freshman Amy Koenigsberg as secretary. School representatives for the sophomore class include Irene Bolante and Beth Nuzzo for the College, Janet Duscher for the School of Engineering and Applied Science, Monique Mayer for the Wharton School and Laura Carr for the Nursing School. Only 10 percent of the freshman class voted in the election. Flicker attributes the low turnout to fraternity and sorority pledging events that prevented some members of the class from "getting the opportunity to vote." But about 25 percent of the sophomore class voted in the first round of the junior class board elections. If elected, Correia -- the incumbent class of 1999 president -- said he wants to organize a concert in September, featuring a national act in order to "really help out the social life" and "start a trend for the future." "The most important thing for running for class office is experience," he said. "I want to build on my experience as freshman and sophomore class president." Gleit -- who served as sophomore class vice president and hopes to become the first female president since 1982 -- said her experience stems from her roles in conducting sophomore class board meetings and in organizing the class ski trip, a day trip to Habitat For Humanity and a pre-football game brunch. Gleit said next year she wants to plan more performing arts events, community service projects and a Manayunk night out. The candidates for junior class vice president both said they want to organize activities to unite the class. Grossman said she plans to organize a class listserv, a charity benefits ball and a Habitat For Humanity event. And Zapatero said she wants to plan fundraisers, a community service project, a class trip and junior screamers. The only newly elected junior class board member is College sophomore Ariella Poncz as treasurer. The other uncontested board positions include College sophomore Andrew Ross as vice president of corporate sponsorship and Wharton sophomore Antal Desai as secretary. The school representatives will be Jeffrey Friedman for the College, Seelig Sinton for Engineering, Valerie Fields for Nursing and Jeffrey Snyder for Wharton.
