Cornell assistant men's basketball coach Michael Taylor committed suicide in his home early yesterday morning. Taylor's roommate called authorities just after midnight and after arriving on the scene, fire department personnel tried unsuccessfully to revive him. Authorities had not announced the exact cause of death as of last night. "All of us are deeply saddened," Cornell vice president for student and academic services, Susan Murphy said. Students who need counseling or help in dealing with their grief can see mental health workers that Cornell has called as result of this incident. Class continued as usual yesterday, according to Cornell spokeswoman Linda Grace -Kobas. Penn basketball coach, Fran Dunphy said he did not know Taylor and heard about the incident while at practice. "Obviously, it's very unfortunate that this situation occurred," Dunphy said. "There are details we don't know about." Cornell defeated Lehigh 82-61 at home Wednesday night, the night of Taylor's death. Cornell was scheduled to play at Buffalo Saturday night, but the teams agreed to reschedule the game for Sunday afternoon as a result of the incident. Taylor, a 1985 graduate from the University of Colorado, became a part of Cornell's coaching staff in 1994 after coaching at the University of Northern Colorado and Colorado College. Originally from Longmont, Col., he also coached at Northglenn High School in Colorado.
